Barbers today have a plethora of tools at their disposal, unlike just a few years ago when there were only a few companies with clippers and trimmers on the market. Now, there are a lot of options to choose from, such as Andis, BaByliss, JRL, Oster, and Wahl, among others. However, selecting the right clipper/trimmer can be daunting and expensive, as there can be a lot of trial and error involved.
In this blog post, I will provide an overview of the clippers and trimmers that I use at my barber shop, along with a high-level reason for why I use them. In future posts, I will provide detailed breakdowns of each implement, including their pros and cons.
First on my list is the Oster Professional Fast Feed (Clipper). This clipper is my go-to for creating a smooth blend in a fade when transitioning from bald to any higher length. The Oster Fast Feed has a smooth cut, and I upgraded to a ceramic moving blade for my personal preference.
Next up is the BaBylissPRO Lo-PROFX Gold (Clipper), which I use whenever I am using any guard size from #1- #3. This clipper feels great in my hands because it is not too bulky, and the motor gets the job done when cutting the hair.
For mowing down thick, long hair, I turn to the Wahl 5-star Senior (Clipper). This workhorse clipper helps me achieve great results when a client is doing a “big chop” where they are going from long hair to a shorter style.
When it comes to trimmers, I have three in rotation. The BaBylissPRO GoldFX (Trimmer) is my go-to for creating bald guidelines, prepping for bald heads, creating designs, and cleaning the nape area on clients. This trimmer is extremely sharp, precise, and durable, and performs great out-of-the-box but is also easy to adjust if necessary.
I typically use the BaBylissPRO Lo-PROFX Gold (Trimmer) to get nice, sharp, crisp lines on clients that have a little tougher skin. This trimmer is extremely sharp out-of-the-box and can irritate softer skin, so I always use a light touch when handling these.
The Wahl Detailer LI (Trimmer) is the trimmer that I use the most as it is my middle-of-the-range trimmer. I have the blade set to where it is not too sharp for softer skin but sharp enough to leave a crispy line every time. I use this trimmer on kids and adults. Also, the trimmer is the perfect size, where it doesn’t feel too small or too bulky while trimming in areas like around the ear or under the chin.
Finally, the Andis T-Outliner T-Blade (Trimmer) is the classic trimmer that I use primarily on my young clients, women clients, or any client that has soft and sensitive skin. This is a reliable trimmer that can be purchased at a reasonable price.
When I want to get extremely close to the skin, I use the BaBylissPRO FoilFX02 Gold (Shaver). This specific foil shaver gets just as close as a straight razor and causes less irritation. Moreover, it has two blades which make the process faster as it covers more area in fewer strokes.
These are just some of the main clippers/trimmers that I use every day and have found work best for me. If you want to learn more about these tools, subscribe to my Ophsol YouTube channel.
